A report about experience and learning from a two-year research project in Umeå, Sweden.
Many schools in Sweden are facing major problems with school fatigue, low motivation, negative influence from the social backgrounds of students, increased gaps between students/schools/residential areas, low academic results and psychosocial problems such as bullying and exclusion.
Drama pedagogy has demonstrated great but underutilized value in schools as an educational tool, not least in students’ development of reading, writing and language.
When using drama and theatre in schools our engagement is both intellectual and emotional, making learning affective.
We cannot ”give” our understanding to another person. Real understanding is experienced and only when understanding is connected with feelings can it be integrated in our minds and shape our values.
